Just What Causes Alkaptonuria?
Alkaptonuria is actually caused by the following
- a defect in the HGD genes.
- This gene is normally caused to break down amino acids
- But when the gene is defective it is unable to break down these amino acids which will cause a substance called homogentisic acid to build up in the body tissues
- The acid will then leave through a person's urine causing it to be a dark color.
